Clybourne Park Tickets

Clybourne Park tickets bring to you the interesting play that was awarded Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2011 and in 2012 it was bestowed the Tony Award for Best Play. It was nominated in several Tony award categories and is also the proud winner of Olivier Award and the Evening Standard Award. The satirical play is written by Bruce Norris with parts and characters being taken as inspiration from Loraine Hansberrry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun. It discusses issues like race, housing, community prejudices and stereotypes in a very convincing way. The play with its intriguing subject and humorous lines is entertaining yet it also gives moments of uneasiness as it highlights some ugly truths and truth at times can get uncomfortable.

The story of Clybourne Park revolves around a house in a suburban Chicago neighborhood and the people who live in it. The play takes on subject of race prejudices and insecurities that transcend from one generation to another. Stuck with the past people at times find it hard to let go of their sense of history and entitlement. The absurdity of it all has been traced in a humorous way in Clybourne Park and has the desired effect on the audiences.

The play starts showing the white couple Russ and Bev selling their house after a tragedy that forces them to take the difficult decision. It is set in the period of 1950s. The flowered wall-papers and set, the complimenting costumes and formal approach successfully capture the feel of that time. The house is planned to be sold to a black couple the unseen Youngers (reference taken from Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun). The historical reference and the detail borrowed from Hansberry’s play by Norris add depth to the whole concept making it more meaningful.

On discovering that the buyers are African American the neighbors are not very thrilled. The residents fear that the property value of the entire neighborhood would come down and repeatedly try to convince the owner not to sell the house to them. The idea of an African couple coming signifies a change that the community finds hard to welcome. The latter half of the play shows the house being sold again in 2009 with the situation reversed and the neighborhood now has become dominated with African-American community and this time it is a white couple that is coming to buy the house.

By tracing the issues in contrast to the old and modern times the sharp witted play highlights that where living in a mixed culture has become part of American cultural landscape yet still people hang on to the ingrained ideas and contradictory opinions. The characters of the play come across as real with their flaws and imperfections. One can easily relate to them.

The contrasting sets and ambiance created on the stage by Daniel Ostling aptly depicts the two periods and adds authenticity to the look and feel of the era being portrayed. The talented cast of seven performers includes Crystal A. Dickinson, Brendan Griffin, Damon Gupton, Christina Kirk, Annie Parisse, Jeremy Shamos and Frank Wood. Pam MacKinnonIt direction comes across as smart as she strongly leads the actors from the 50s to the 2000s.

Together with great comic timing, effective punch lines and inspiring performances by versatile actors Clybourne Park makes a very impressive production that touches on the delicate subject in a humorous manner.  It has been showing to packed houses since it premiered at Playwrights Horizons in 2010, New York and since then it has been getting positive reviews and is being shown to packed houses. If you want to see the popular play then get the tickets fast. Owing to the popular demand cheap Clybourne tickets may be hard to get but if you are lucky you might get your hands on it.
