The ubiquitous touring extravaganza never disappoints and currently with its production “Alegría” has set up home by Toronto’s waterfront at the Ontario Place. Premiered in 1994, Alegría was created by the co-founder of Cirque du Soleil, Gilles Ste-Croix along with the artistic director Franco Dragone. An amalgamation of commedia dell’arte style with European influences, Alegría toured successfully for 19 years. Now, as it has entered its 25th year, one of the longest running Cirque’s productions is bringing the audience a revamped version.
“Alegría: In A New Light” soars under the direction of Jean-Guy Legault and Daniel Ross. The costumes by Dominique Lemieux add to the grandeur of the show. The colorful attires are richly textured and compliment the intricate, captivating ambiance of Alegría. Music by René Dupéré neatly wraps up the brilliant effort by the entire creative team. Performed by Irene Ruiz (singer in White) and Virginia Alvez Garcia (singer in Black), both display strong emotions and passion. Live instrumentals and singing enhance the overall magical setting.
