This is because Charlie feels that he needs to become hard-hearted and intimidating to win the respect that he deserves. What follows is a series of zany hijinks and misadventures, as Charlie struggles to regain control of the havoc that his newfound approach to winning at life, so to speak, wreaks on him.
The first production of Channeling Kevin Spacey premiered at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival in 2008, where it was well received. Thereon, it made several appearances on many theatrical festivals, including The Edmonton Fringe, the largest festival of its kind in all of North America. The current production of Channeling Kevin Spacey is playing off-Broadway. It is directed by Elan Wolf Farbiarz, one of the authors of the show, known for his work in similar plays like The Bible and The Movies. The play stars David Michaels – recognized for his appearances in shows like Cassanova Was a Woman, Next Broadway Star, The Drowsy Chaperone and the national tour of Oklahoma! – in the role of the protagonist, Charlie. Accompanying him is Jamil Chokachi – renowned for his roles in such famous plays as Sweeney Todd, Chess, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Comedy of Errors and A Midsummer Night's Dream – who plays several characters.
The show is being produced by Wolf & William Productions, which is known to be a platform for emerging artists. Chris Kompanek of TheatreMania praised Chokachi’s multiple-character performance saying “He moves from Charlie's snippy girlfriend to the women he pines after at the bagel store with a natural ease” and compared him to one-time Saturday Night Live alumnus Chris Kattan.
