A Theatrical Masterpiece
With direction from the legendary Sir Trevor Nunn and choreography by Gillian Lynne, Cats tells the story of a cat tribe named “Jellices.” The central premise of the story revolves around the night the tribe makes what is recognized as “the Jellicle choice.” The group picks the cat that will rise up to the “Heaviside Layer” above the Earth and return to a new life.
Arguably one of the greatest stage productions of all time, Cats was first performed in 1981 in the West End. The following year, the same creative team took the musical to Broadway. A record-setting phenomenon, the Broadway production of Cats ran for 18 years while the one in London went on for 21 years.
One of the Best of All Time
Winner of multiple Tony Awards and Laurence Olivier Awards, Cats ruled the Broadway stage from 1997 to 2006. During this period, it was the longest-running production in the history of Broadway before Phantom of the Opera overtook it in 2006. Notable artists like Tony Award winner Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige have been associated with the production over the years.
To-date, the popular musical has raked in close to $350 million. Performances around the world and translations into more than 20 different languages have made Cats a truly global phenomenon. The original Broadway production of the musical garnered 11 nominations at the 1983 Tony Awards, going on to win in 7 of those categories.
