Written by one of the most influential dramatist of his generation, Harold Pinter, the Betrayal is critically regarded as one of the major dramatic works. It is a thought provoking story dealing with issues of love, infidelity and deception while portraying long passionate affairs of couples outside their marriage. Buy Betrayal tickets and experience the economical dialogues, hidden emotions, dishonesty, veiled motivations and deceptions in this intricate web of lies and secrets as portrayed by this play.

Written in 1978 and set in London and Venice, the plot involves a married couple Emma and Robert. For five years, Emma carries on with a secret love affair with Robert’s friend Jerry, who is married to another woman named Judith. Emma finally tells Robert of her unfaithfulness without telling Jerry and still continues her affair. Two years after her breakup with Robert, she tells Jerry that her marriage is over and lies that she told Robert about her affair "last night" although Robert had known it for the past four years.

The play proceeds in reverse chronological sequence making the plot more innovative and appealing. The first scene takes place after the end of the affair and last scene ends when affair begins. The play highlights different permutations of betrayal when characters deceive their spouses and even themselves. A love affair, that ends a marriage and destroys a friendship, is what this play revolves around.

Several productions of Betrayal have been performed in all parts of the world. It was first produced by London’s National Theatre in 1978 under Peter Hall’s direction. 2007 brought a revival of Betrayal at Donmar Warehouse Theatre. It was also revived at The Crucible Theater Sheffield in 2012. The play had its Broadway premiere in 1980 at Trafalgar Theatre in America. A revival was staged in 2000 at American Airlines Theater. Other productions of Betrayal took place in Australia at Sydney Theater Company in 1999 directed by David Berthold, Italy in 2009, Hong Kong in 2004 at Theater de R&D and Buenos Aires in 2013 with directions by Ciro Zorzoli.

The play won Laurence Olivier Award for best new play in 1979. It has garnered positive reviews and critical acclaim from everywhere. The play is renowned for its fascinating themes and the way these themes are explored. Another interesting fact is that the story was inspired by Pinter’s own affair with Television presenter Joan who was married to Bakewell.

Pinter’s Betrayal has been revived again with sparkling performances and seamless direction. Directed by ten time Tony award winner Mike Nichols, the play stars Daniel Craig as Robert, Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz as Emma and Olivier Award nominated Rafe Spall as Jerry. With this renowned cast bringing the play’s honesty, simplicity and beauty to the stage, this is an exemplary revival of the play. According to New York Post, this is "the most exciting cast of any season in memory" while Washington Post praised Mike Nichols calling him "The finest Director of the 20th Century". Original music of the play is produced by James Murphy while Scott Lehree did the sound design. Lighting is organized by Brain MacDevitt and together the team showcases an image that is sure to resonate in audiences’ memory for many years to come.
