Batman Live has at its center the story of Batman & Robin’s struggle against the nefarious schemes of the criminals of the underworld. The setting is the fictional Gotham City in USA, where the story starts with a flashback of the billionaire industrialist, playboy and philanthropist Bruce Wayne. He witnessed the murder of his parents as a youth, having grown up with the promise of fighting the underworld criminals as a masked crusader in the dark of the night, taking the name of Batman. Flanked by his ally Commissioner Gordon & faithful butler Alfred Pennyworth, he has garnered a reputation while upholding justice in Gotham City. The story delves around his adoption of the youngster Dick Grayson, whose circus performing parents were killed by a gangster. Eager to veer him away from his own methods, Batman is instead dismayed that Robin (as Dick becomes known) becomes embroiled in the same crime-fighting spirit as his mentor. However, some lessons remain to be taught, such as Batman’s pivotal concept of differentiating seeking justice from seeking revenge. The “Dynamic Duo” has its superhero abilities put to the ultimate test when archenemy Joker plots to destroy Batman by releasing the inmates of the Arkham Asylum. Furthermore, he intends to use Robin as bait to ensure Batman’s downfall. To add to his misery, Gotham’s villains are more powerful than ever before, led by the dark, psychopathic Joker. Also noteworthy is the caper-obsessed Riddler, the smart thieving mobster Penguin, the seductive & toxic eco-terrorist Poison Ivy, former district attorney turned ruthless criminal Two-Face Harvey Dent, Joker’s insane unforgiving girlfriend Harley Quinn, whip-carrying burglar Catwoman (also one of Batman’s love interests), and hallucinating scaremonger Scarecrow.
The creative director for Batman Live is Anthony Van Laast. Van Laast has worked as choreographer for musicals like Sister Act, Mamma Mia!, & Jesus Christ Superstar, & also directed Grease in Scandinavia. Film credits include Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, Mamma Mia!, and Who Dares Wins. His co-director is James Powell, with his credits including Les Miserables, Mary Poppins, & Dirty Dancing. Es Devlin is the production designer, having designed stage & concerts for Lady Gaga, Kanye West, & the Royal Shakespeare Company. James Seymour Brett is the composer & orchestrator, having composed for the live arena show Walking with Dinosaurs, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations, X-Men, & Band of Brothers. Sound designer Simon Baker is a recipient of the 2002 International Sound Designer of the Year Award from Entertainment Design Magazine. Baker has worked in RSC, Royal Court & NT.
Hunchback of Notre Dame, Disney’s Lion King and West Side Story veteran Jack Galloway is the show’s costume designer. The acrobatics & aerial feats require special training, with Circus Space being the circus consultants for the show. It is the UK’s National Center for Circus Arts, profiting from the leadership of Juliette Hardy-Donaldson. The production first premiered on 19th July, 2011 at the Manchester Evening News Arena.
