Creative mastermind

It is safe to say that Arthur Miller is one of the most successful American playwrights of the twentieth century. Throughout his career, he has penned down several plays out of which, ‘Death of a Salesman,’ ‘A View from the Bridge,’ ‘All My Sons’ and ‘The Crucible’ were some of his most famous works. Born in New York City, Arthur wrote his first play titled, ‘No Villain’ while he was enrolled in the University of Michigan. It earned him an Avery Hopwood Award which encouraged him to become a playwright. After his graduation in 1938, he began to contribute his efforts to theater and soon wrote the play, ‘The Man Who Had All The Luck’ in 1940 which bagged the Theatre Guild’s National Award. Arthur released more stage plays and also started to come out with radio plays like, ‘I Was Married in Bataan,’ ‘Grandpa and the Statue,’ ‘The Guardsman’ and ‘The story of Gus’ among others.

Arthur Miller’s work is still being enjoyed today. Two of his plays, ‘A View from the Bridge’ and ‘The Crucible’ were recently revived and earned a couple of nominations for the Tony Award. Now, the Roundabout Theater Company will be reviving Miller’s creative masterpiece titled, ‘The Price’ which will be directed by Terry Kinney.

The Price

The Price was penned down by Arthur Miller in 1968. The play made its Broadway debut the same year and was performed at New York City’s Morosco Theatre. The show received applause from the theatergoers and positive reviews were also published about it by different publications including, The New York Times.

Ulu Grosbard handled the directorial responsibilities of the premiere show. It featured Harold Gary in the role of Gregory Solomon, Pat Hingle as Victor Franz, Kate Reid as Esther Franz and the role of Walter Franz was performed by Arthur Kennedy. The original Broadway production of Arthur Miller’s play also got nominated for two Tony Awards in the categories of, ‘Best Scenic Design’ and ‘Best Play.’

Since its debut show, The Price has been revived on Broadway three times and has been staged in venues like the Playhouse Theatre, the Criterion Center Stage Right and the Royale Theatre. Many other productions of the show have also been performed in popular venues like, ArtSpace at Crestwood Court, the Octagon Theatre, the ACT Theatre, the Artists Repertory Theatre, the Mark Tamper Forum and the Timeline Theatre.
