The company was formed in 1966 and initially was named as the Arizona Civic Theatre. In its beginning years ATC performed in Tucson, specifically in the basement of a hotel called Santa Rita. However the company soon reached a full professional status in 1972, after producing shows like Hansel and Gretel, The Odd Couple, The Mouse Trap, Summer Tree, Pinocchio, Cyrano,Spoon River Anthology and A Man for All Seasons to name just a few. In the same year it became a member of the biggest association of professional theatre in America titled, League of Resident Theatres. The company soon started presenting sections of its season to the audience in Phoenix and the next year in 1979, switched its name to Arizona Theatre Company.
Since 1983 the company has been performing full-fledged seasons to a massive, cumulative audience of more than 150,000 people, in both the cities of Phoenix and Tucson. Acknowledging the fact that ATC has successfully managed to produce full seasons and built its credibility in terms of loyal fan base and strong financial footings, Arizona Theatre Company has been named by many as a model of Performing Arts Institution. Throughout the course of its history extending to over four decades, ATC has produced an astounding number of about 200 plays. These plays range from classic works of Moliere, Shaw and Shakespeare to more modern writers like Stoppard, Fugard and Shepard. Over the years, the theatre has managed to build a striking reputation on a national scale. Accruing to this fact, many of the country’s top talented theatre artists have joined ATC. The highly talented arts director, David Ira Goldstein is part of the company and has an experience of more than 20 years in the field of theatre.
