Angels in America originally premiered in 1991 as a two part play by Tony Kushner, which was later adapted into an opera and a television miniseries. The play is divided up into two parts and the first part is named Millennium Approaches. Before the play premiered for the first time, the Act one or the Millennium Approaches was performed for the first time at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles by the Center Theatre Group in May of 1990. The play was initially staged as work shop, but later Kushner refined and developed the rest of the play along with the Mark Taper Forum. Later on with David Esbjornson as its director, the play made its world debut when San Francisco based Eureka Theatre Company performed it for the first time in May 1991.
The play later moved to London, where Royal National Theatre production staged the play under the direction of Declan Donnellan at the Cottesloe Theatre. The original London cast of the play featured Nick Reding, Henry Goodman, Sean Chapman, Felicity Montagu, and Marcus D’Amico. The music of the play was designed by Paddy Cuneen, while Scenic and Lighting design was done by Nick Ormerod and Mick Hughes respectively. After officially premier on January 23, 1992, the play’s performance run finally came to an end after a year.
As the act one of the play was being performed and appreciated, the play’s second act “Perestroika” was in the making. Before officially making its world premiere, Perestroika was initially performed as staged readings by the Mark Taper Forum and the Eureka Theatre Center in May 1992. In the November of the same year, the Act two of the play made its world premiere as it was produced by the Mark Taper Forum. The original Mark Taper Forum production was co-directed by Tony Taccone and Oskar Eustis. The following year, the part two of the play also crossed borders as it premiered at the Royal National Theatre. Along with the premier of the Act Two, the production of the Act One was revived as well. With the designers and directors being the same as the previous Act One production, the cast of the Act Two featured Stephan Dillane, Daniel Craig, David Schofield, Jason Isaacs and Clare Holman.
The play made its Broadway debut later in 1993, in a production that was directed by George C. Wolfe at the Walter Kerr Theatre. During its run at the Broadway, the act one of the play was performed throughout the month of May, while the Act two took stage all through November. The original Broadway cast of the play featured Kathleen Chalfant, Rob Leibman, Maricia Gary Harden, Stephen Spinella, Jeffrey Wright, Joe Mantello, David Marshall Grant and Ellen McLaughlin. Both the acts of the play received critical acclaim and also took home Tony Awards for Best Play twice, once in 1993 followed by another one in 1994. In addition to that, both the acts also took home Drama Desk Awards for the category of Outstanding Play.
Following the fame of the Broadway production, the play was also adapted into a Television miniseries by the HBO Films. The miniseries was directed by Mike Nichols while the original script was adapted by Tony Kushner. The miniseries went on to receive international fame after being broadcast in various formats on HBO. The miniseries was either broadcasted in one hour chapter format or a three hour segment. The miniseries achieved massive success worldwide, and became the most watch Television miniseries of the year. The series also went on to receive Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for being the Best miniseries. The cast of the miniseries featured Meryl Streep, Al Pacino Jeffrey Wright, Emma Thompson, Mary Louis Parker, Ben Shenkman and Justin Kirk.
After enjoying huge amounts of success all over the globe, the play is back in its original form once again this season. So if you’ve missed it in the past, make sure you grab your Angels in America tickets today.
