Stage adaptation of popular animated movies is not something rare in the American theater scene. But what is, the magical quality required to retain the story’s original charm and blend it with something fresh to produce a quality drama. Anastasia achieves all that and more. Based on the 1997 animated movie of the same name and also inspired from its 1956 counterpart starring Ingrid Bergman, Anastasia the musical has been called a hybrid adaptation. Helmed by the Tony Award winning director Darko Tresnjak and with its book by Terrence McNally, the duo has managed to create a show that affirms the power of myth. Abandoning most of its animated elements, the musical follows a more adult-oriented plot. The Broadway premiere of Anastasia will begin previews on March 23, 2017, at the Broadhurst Theatre. The official opening will take place on April 24, Anastasia tickets for which are now available.

Hartford Stage’s Anastasia Set to Make Broadway Debut
Artistic director at the Hartford Stage, Darko Tresnjak has joined forces with the book writer Terrence McNally to recreate Anastasia. Flanking them are the Tony Award winning composers/lyricists, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. The beautifully realized production uses the source material to touch upon historical events, the myth of the Romanov dynasty and Russian history.
The Plot – Anastasia is a rousing story of a young, brave woman. Set in the 1920 Paris, the plot centers on the missing Russian princess suffering from amnesia. She’s on a quest to solve the mystery of her past and at the same time adjust to the rapidly changing world.
Anastasia, daughter of the Russian royal family, managed to escape execution that killed her family and ends up in Paris. Her grandmother, the Dowager Empress, learns about her escape and posts reward money for whoever brings her long-lost granddaughter to her. Thus starts an adventure-filled story that includes a cruel Soviet officer who wants to kill Anastasia and a dashing con-man Dmitry who eventually falls for her. Together they embark on an epic, romantic journey to help Anastasia find home, love and family.
The Cast – Christy Altomare who made her Broadway debut on Mamma Mia! as Sophie, has been roped in to play the lead role of Anya. And she wowed the audience during the musical’s run at the Hartford Stage. A star in the making, her moving and grounded acting, matched with her stunning vocals make her a perfect choice for the role. She simply nailed the iconic numbers “Journey to the Past” and “I Want”, making Anya even more appealing to the audience.
Strong-voiced and charming, Derek Klena adds depth to the character Dmitry. As a con man he’s able to bring the much needed charisma to his performance and impresses all with his vocal delivery. As compared to the movie, the character of Dmitry has been given a lot of material in the stage adaptation and Klena takes full advantage of it. His rendition of “In a Crowd of Thousands” managed to sweep the crowd off its feet.
John Bolton as Vlad adds sidekick antics to the plot. Along with Caroline O’Connor as Lily, they provide humor and comedic fun to the audience, soaring at the chirpy tracks like “The Countless and the Common Man”.
Creative Team – Darko Tresnjak is known for his creative stage productions and he has outdone himself in Anastasia. If he was incredible in his efforts on the “Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder”, he’s definitely better in this latest production. Tresnjak has set up the entire show like a well-balanced dance tempo, speeding up and slowing down when the need arises.
He’s given full support by the scenic designer Alexander Dodge. Through digital enhancements and heavy projections, the pace is kept consistent and Dodge’s elegant design allows a variety of settings. Video artist and projection designer Aaron Rhyne certainly shines in this production. His work on the train car scene featuring the song “We’ll Go From There” is a knockout and heightens the drama. Lighting by Donald Holder and Linda Cho’s costumes are classy, reflecting regal grandness.
Peggy Hickey steps things up as the choreographer and matches the astounding music by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Besides the original Oscar nominated song “Journey to the Past” and the haunting number “Once Upon a December”, Flaherty and Ahrens have composed a slew of new songs as well.
All in all, Anastasia is sensational. With Anastasia tickets in hand, catch the fairy-tale musical’s Broadway premiere at the Broadhurst Theatre.
