An Ideal Husband is a comedy stage play of 1895 by Oscar Wilde. The play revolves around political corruption and blackmailing, while touching on the themes such as private and public honor. The stage show is set in London and is considered as one of the dramatic masterpieces of Oscar Wilde, along with The Importance of Being Earnest. An Ideal Husband is his second most famous and successfully produced play, after Earnest. Oscar Wilde started penning the play in 1893 and finished it by the end of the year. The act opened in January 1895 and ran for 124 performances, later moving on to the Criterion Theatre and had several performances as well. Slight changes were made to the stage adaptation which included important additions. Wilde was in the lead to make efforts in order to give access of these plays to his reading fans. So, if you have never read any of his published plays or watched his performed acts you should get your An Ideal Husband tickets as soon as you can. And if you have already watched his shows, get ready for another great performance soon to take place.

Lewis Waller was the original producer of the play and it premiered in i Haymarket Theater in January, 1895. The initial cast included Mr. Alfred Bishop, Mr. Charles H. Hawtrey, Mr. Lewis Waller, Mr. Cosmo Stuart, Mr. Harry Stanford, Brookfield, Mr. H. Deane, Mr. Charles Meyrick, Mr. Goodhart, Miss Julia Neilson, Miss Vane Featherston, Miss Helen Forsyth, Miss Maud Millet and Miss Florence West.

The play included a number of themes because Oscar found some influences by the situation during the 1980s. Here Oscar may have been talking about his own circumstances and his worries related to his matters which are still a secret. Other of his themes involves the women’s position in society. Another aspect in the play is about anti-aristocratic sentiments. Lady Markby and Lady Basildon are time after time portrayed as ridiculously two-faced, talking about one thing at a moment, then spinning it around and saying something very opposite. The overall depiction of the higher class of England shows an attitude of insincerity and severe observation to impractical rules. The Dramatis Personae include The Earl of Caversham, Mr. Montford, K.G, Phipps, Mason and Lady Chiltern among others. The plot of the play opens at a dinner party in Sir Robert Chiltern’s home in Grosvenor Square, a London’s fashionable place. Sir Robert is a prestigious associate of the House of Commons.  He and Lady Chiltern, his wife, are hosting a get-together that consists of Lord Goring, a friend of Sir Robert. At the party, Lady Chiltern's school days’ enemy Mrs. Cheveley, tries to blackmail Robert for the support of a fraudulent plan to construct a canal in Argentina. Once Mrs. Cheveley pointedly reports to Lady Chiltern about the change in Sir Robert on the subject of the canal proposal, the ethically inflexible Lady who is unaware of the past of her husband as well as the plan to blackmail claims that he goes back on his promise.

The play is established to be extremely admired in its initial run, giving more than a hundred performances. It was also highly appreciated by the critics and George Bernard Shaw admired the play stating "Mr. Wilde is to me our only thorough Playwright.” Wilde plays with everything in his material such as with wit, philosophy, drama, audience and actors as well as the entire theatre. So, hurry and don’t miss this opportunity of watching a play of all times as it announces its opening real soon.
