A Classic Tale Brought to the Stage

When Amélie, or Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, first came out in 2001, few people knew what a hit it would go on to become. This whimsical and enchanting tale centers around a reserved waitress, played by Audrey Tautou. As the protagonist struggles with her own loneliness and isolation, she decides to dedicate her time to improving the lives of strangers around her. As she works in her little café, the Café des 2 Moulins in Montmart, Amélie begins to fulfill the wishes of passers-by and customers alike.

The film was a huge success. It won numerous awards and received widespread critical acclaim. It also went on to become the highest grossing French language film which was released in the United States. It also won numerous awards and accolades, including two BAFTA Awards and five Academy Award nominations.

The film’s beautiful imagery and unique feel made for an instant hit. It therefore came as no surprise when it was announced that a musical was being created based on the story.

The Productions of Amélie

Amélie premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in downtown Berkley, California, in September 2015. The musical was written by Craig Lucas (Prelude to a Kiss, An American in Paris) and features music by Daniel Messé, a book written by Craig Lucas, and lyrics written by both Messé and Nathan Tysen.

The musical was directed by Pam MacKinnon and featured costume and set design by David Zinn. Samantha Barks, the breakout star of the Les Misérables film, was cast to play the role of Amélie Poulain.

With the shows tremendous initial reception, it was announced that the production would also run in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre from December 4 to January 15, 2017 before opening on Broadway in 2017.

For this next set of shows, Phillipa Soo, a Tony Award nominee and star on the critically acclaimed Broadway hit Hamilton, will be taking on the role of Amélie.

The musical will then open at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway in the spring of 2017.
