A Doll’s House – The Original Story
A Doll’s House first opened at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 1879. It was a three-act play that was published a month before it appeared on stage. The playwright, Henrik Ibsen focused his storyline on breaking the norms of married life that were prevalent at the time. This is the reason why the play ended up stirring quite a bit of controversy among various circles at the time.
The storyline was based on a true series of events that happened in the life of the author’s friend, Laura and her husband, Victor. Ibsen started thinking about the play sometime around May of 1878 and labeled it as a “modern tragedy”, stating that "A woman cannot be herself in modern society," he argues, since it is "an exclusively male society, with laws made by men and with prosecutors and judges who assess feminine conduct from a masculine standpoint."
