Plays often win plaudits on the basis of a strong cast complementing each other’s characters well. Chazz Palminteri’s semi-autobiographical one man show A Bronx Tale relates the coming-of-age story of a young man torn between allegiance to his father’s upright working class values and the snazzy lifestyle of the local mob boss who befriends him. And what’s more is that Chazz pulls off the 18 characters all by himself! His impeccable delivery and physicality make it a vivid experience as he paints the neighborhood’s various colorful multi-layered characters to perfection.

Palminteri first wrote A Bronx Tale in 1990. It is based partly on his childhood experiences while growing up in the Bronx, with many interviews indicating the starting murder scene to be completely true to life. A Bronx Tale Tickets have gripped the local market’s attention and fans are hurrying to theaters to watch Palminteri pull off his magic.

The story starts with Calogero Anello, a young kid taking a ride with his bus driver father Lorenzo while discussing the fate of the Yankees. The neighborhood mob boss Sonny, who hangs out at the nearby bar, mystifies Calogero and he tries to imitate his three-finger salute. One day Calogero is on his way to his apartment when he witnesses a brawl, with one man assaulting the other with a baseball bat. Sonny hurries to the man’s rescue and shoots the aggressor. When Calogero is summoned by NYPD detectives as a witness, he chooses to keep quiet, earning Sonny’s approval. Sonny then took him under his wing. Calogero plays a craps game with Sonny, carries drinks, earns the nickname “C” and gets tips amounting to $600. When Lorenzo discovers of the association, he returns the money in a heated altercation with Sonny over who has the right to bring up his son and slaps the unrepentant Calogero. He later reconciles and carries him home.

Eight years later, Calogero is a young man who is close to Sonny and his mob, this being unknown to his father. He is also a part of a local gang of Italians whose company spoils him and is advised by Sonny to keep clear of the troublemakers. When he argues with Sonny to imitate his lifestyle, he is sternly advised against it and told to focus on getting a good education. In school, he falls for an African-American girl Jane and they agree on meeting for a date the following evening. Calogero’s troublemaking friends beat up some blacks that day and he tries to intervene in vain. Sonny lends him his car for the date but Calogero is met by a tearful and angry Jane who is accompanied by a brother that identifies Calogero as an assailant from the previous day. Despite his protests, tensions escalate, with Calogero calling him “a nigger”, much to Jane’s disgust, who leaves. Heartbroken, he drives home, but his car is spotted by Lorenzo, who realizes his association with Sonny. A heated argument ensues where Calogero insults his father’s working class values and storms off. Outside, he is suddenly roughed up by an irate Sonny and his cronies, who have found a bomb in the car and think Calogero tried to assassinate Sonny.

Calogero pleads his innocence and breaks down, with Sonny finally believing him. Calogero’s world is fast caving in and he has to strive to make sense of the madness soon.

Chazz Palminteri is the original writer of A Bronx Tale. The play changed his bit-part role reputation in Hollywood. He has also starred in hit films like The Usual Suspects, Bullets over Broadway (Oscar nominated) and A Bronx Tale. 4-times Tony winner Jerry Zaks is director, with John Gromada handling the wonderful jazz, doo-wop and urban soul music composition. A Bronx Tale premiered in Los Angeles in 1990.

After the initial critically successful premier, it shifted to New York off-Broadway. Robert De Niro became a fan after viewing it and starred in his directorial debut opposite ‘Palminteri’ in 1993’s film version. The hugely popular current revival began in Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theater in 2007. Palminteri’s great acting and gesturing, which allows him to paint the surroundings of 60s Bronx, has been roundly applauded.

Fans with A Bronx Tale Tickets will agree that pulling off a one man show requires great audience-capturing skills and in-depth insight into each character’s details. A Bronx Tale is very close to Palminteri’s heart and his superhuman effort is there for all A Bronx Tale Tickets holders to witness and enjoy.
