Whether it's the prestige of the famous red & white jersey or the hallowed turf of Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox are steeped in history. And to uphold the grand traditions of one of baseball's most followed teams requires a constant influx of great talent from the grassroots level. That is precisely where the Pawtucket Red Sox have excelled. The PawSox, as they are colloquially known, are the minor league baseball affiliates of the Boston Red Sox, based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Minor league baseball consists of a number of professional leagues, housing 240 teams in North & South America, which have an inferior professional level to Major League Baseball. The purpose of such teams in the league is to provide training & valuable experience to the promising talent that can then be called up to the MLB franchise as per agreement. Thus, they act as proverbial feeder clubs, although they do compete fiercely as separate entities in regional championships. Pawtucket Red Sox are certified Triple A affiliates, the highest level of play of minor league baseball. Of the three leagues that Triple A affiliates are divided into, Pawtucket plays in the International League's North Division.
The home of the Pawtucket Red Sox is the McCoy Stadium, named after the famous local mayor. Opened in 1946, McCoy has had a number of different tenants. It is well-known for its expansive foul territory because of the semicircular construction. The dugouts are underneath the grandstands putting fans in close proximity of the players, leading to traditions such as "autograph-fishing". Up to 11,800 fans are seated in the stadium when including bleachers, standing rooms & grass berm. Pawtucket Red Sox first played under the name as Double A affiliates in 1969, replacing the Pawtucket Indians (Cleveland's minor league affiliate). Meanwhile, Boston Red Sox's affiliate club, the Louisville Colonels, moved to Pawtucket in 1972, starting the true form of the Triple A affiliate Pawtucket team, replacing the Double A team.
Pawtucket saw instant success, galloping to a Governor's Cup (IL Championship) in their first year. Cecil Cooper & Dick Pole masterminded the triumph, yet the franchise began dipping in performance & administration thereafter. The franchise went bankrupt in 1976, & it was only through the timely intervention of Canadian businessman Ben Mondor that they were saved. Mondor immediately reshaped everything; from making parking at McCoy free to shaking up the coaching structure. The Pawtucket Red Sox responded immediately to the swelling attendances, with two runners-up finishes followed by the second Governor's Cup in 1984. Pawtucket finished 1st in 4 IL regular seasons since his acquisition. Mondor's shrewd business sense has ensured Pawtucket Red Sox tickets are sold out frequently & the team reaches such heights as would be expected from an affiliate of the legendary Boston Red Sox.
Ben Mondor is the owner of Pawtucket Red Sox, having revolutionized the franchise ever since his purchase in 1977. Lou Schwechheimer is the General Manager, & the Head Coach is Tory Lovullo, who replaced current Boston Red Sox first base coach Ron Johnson this year, completing the selection panel. Pawtucket Red Sox has worked as a brilliant channel for training promising youngsters to shine as the MLB level. Great players like Dick Pole, Cecil Cooper, Roger Clemens and Manny Rodriguez are Pawtucket alumni who have pushed the sport to a higher level.
Pawtucket Red Sox clinched their first Governor's Cup in 1973 in their inaugural year. Darrell Johnson led a thrashing of Charleston to give the infant franchise a big boost at the start. The team then saw failed attempts in the finals against Charleston (1978) & Richmond (1979) in consecutive years before Pawtucket beat the now-defunct Maine Guides 3-2 in 1984 for their second Cup. It was just reward for Mondor's revolutionary reshaping of Pawtucket Red Sox, & the team has come close twice thereafter, losing to Columbus in 1991 & Durham in 2003. There have been 4 division titles as well, coming in 1991, 1994, 1996 & 2003. Pawtucket were also part of, & victors in, the longest baseball game in history, a 33-innings slugfest with the Rochester Red Wings.
Pawtucket Red Sox tickets are in demand once more after the dip in the 70s. With other minor league affiliates struggling to make a distinguished name, Pawtucket has stepped out of the shadow of its more illustrious affiliate with aplomb. Pawtucket Red Sox tickets are your pass to watching future stars slug it out as they jostle for roster spots.
