Just a Little Nudge
The World Wrestling Entertainment is the biggest wrestling promotion company in the world. They host over three hundred live events each year that are broadcasted in over a hundred and fifty countries and seen by over thirty five million people around the globe. They set the standard when it comes to this industry, yet it always wasn’t like this. It was a long journey that brought Vincent Kennedy “Vince” McMahon to the summit of the sport, and it starts with his grandfather back in the fifties.
Roderick James "Jess" McMahon was a successful boxing and wrestling promoter who had been involved in the business since 1926. In 1952 he and his friend, Toots Mondt created the Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC). They enjoyed a lot of success in their early years and built up a strong roster of wrestlers that were known all across the country. However McMahon died in 1954 and his legacy was left to his son to carry forward.
The Ball Gets Rolling
Vincent James McMahon formed an excellent partnership with Mondt in the early years and they took their company to the pinnacle of wrestling in the country, controlling over seventy percent of all fights taking place at the time. However, soon after they got into a disagreement with the NWA, who they had joined a year after the CWC was formed, and left to form the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1963. By the seventies they had gotten a television deal and the company went from strength to strength. Differences developed between McMahon and Mondt, and the latter soon left sometime in the late sixties.
The younger McMahon came into the business with a vengeance and started expanding at an amazing rate. He and his wife, Linda Edwards formed Titan Sports Inc and that was the start of WWE’s journey to world domination.
An Avalanche of Success
The success of the WWE, led to the formation of WWE NXT in 2012. This is the development branch of the WWE and many of today’s current superstars made their start here. The roster consists of talented up and coming wrestlers, with epic storylines that keep fans glued to the action.
The NXT Championship, the NXT Tag Team Championship and the NXT Women's Championship titles are the three big accolades. The women’s title is especially famous as the program has been credited with giving female wrestlers a more defined and major role in the organization.
