The first time that the dual team tournament took place, it was successfully hosted a week after the traditional championship took place and was hosted at the famed U.S. Cellular Center that is in Cedar Rapids right till 2012.
 
After the event that took place in 2012, it was decided that the dual team tournament will take place on the Wednesday prior to the traditional championship which is held in Des Moines. This decision came with a lot of controversy as many other wrestling teams had sat their state qualifiers just for to take part in the dual team championship. In the history of the Iowa City, the Iowa State University (Ames) as well as the State University of Iowa which is a part of Iowa used to host open state contests and championships of wrestling that were not administered nor were they legalized by the known IHSAA.
