A Little History

Between 1871 and 1875, the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was the highest level of professional baseball in the country. It folded and the National League was formed in 1876 to take over that mantle. There was no postseason back then and the side with the best record in the regular season was crowned as the champion. In the year 1882 however; the American Association was formed and as a result of that, the American Association and the National League began to play a series of games, starting 1884, to determine the champions. Those series were disorganized though.

The American Association collapsed just after the conclusion of the 1891 campaign, which left the NL as the only professional league. In the year 1892, for one season only, the league title was awarded after a playoff between the half season champions. Then in the year 1893, the team with the best record during the regular season began to receive the pennant. Between 1894 and 1897, the league winners began to play the runners-up for what was known as the Temple Cup back then. In 1900, only for a year, another series based on this format was played.

The MLB World Series Is Born

In the year 1901, the American League was incepted to end NL's run as the sole professional league in the country. The two leagues got involved in a bitter battle of supremacy and the championship series was played for two years as a result of that. The league's however ended the bitter standoff after two years and as a result of that, teams from both the AL and the NL squared off against each other in a few exhibition games after the conclusion of the 1903 season.

In one of those two games, pennants winners of both the leagues squared-off. The Boston Americans (later renamed the Boston Red Sox) represented the AL, while the Pittsburgh Pirates represented the NL. Boston clinched the series 5-3 and that faceoff is now known as the first edition of the MLB World Series. It was a watershed moment for the AL because that triumph proved that the league could match the NL.

The AL Vs NL Head-to-Head

The MLB World Series has been played 113 times over the years. The American League has managed to win 65 of those whereas National League sides have come out on top in 48 series. The Yankees account for over 41% of all the American League World Series triumphs with 27 wins to their credit.

The Biggest Winners

The New York Yankees have won an incredible 27 World Series titles which is the most by any team in the Major League Baseball history. Second on that list is the St Louis Cardinals of the National League with 11World Series wins to their credit. The Oakland Athletics of the AL are third with 9 World Series wins, even though their last win came way back in the year 1989.
