The Wisconsin Badgers are supervised by the former head coach of the football team, director Barry Alvarez. The team mascot is popularly known as "Bucky Badger" but its actual title is "Buckingham U. Badger". When the lead miners arrived at Wisconsin in the 1820s and 1830s, the state was labeled the "Badger State". The name was apt since the miners had to seek shelter into hillsides in burrowed tunnels just like the badgers in the absence of natural cover in the cruel winter season. The University of Wisconsin assumed the badger mascot in 1889. A strutting and scowling badger donning a double-colored striped jersey was kept as emblem which was designed in 1940 by Art Evans and revised in the early 2000s.

At the first few football games, a real badger was displayed but since it was too wild to be controlled, hence it was sent to a nearby Zoo. A live raccoon was also used to complement the team's image for a while. At the turn of the year 2006, the Mascot Hall of Fame's College Division inducted Bucky Badger.

Wisconsin Badgers football program ranks the Big Ten as the most booming since the early 1990s. It is also the same time when Barry Alvarez started serving as the head coach. The Badgers emerged as winners in three Big Ten Championships under him. They also secured victory in three Rose Bowls. The Badgers overcame the Auburn Tigers in the 2005 season which was also the last year of Alvarez with the team. Bret Bielema assumed the coaching of the team in 2006 and he led the team to a striking 17-4 win over Arkansas in the Capital One Bowl besides establishing a 12-1 record. The Badgers have contributed to fourteen bowl appearances in the past 15 seasons and command a 10-10 in bowl games. Two Heisman Trophy winners have also fell evolved in the domain of the Badger football program, including running back Ron Dayne in 1999 and fullback Alan Ameche in 1954.

The home ground of the Wisconsin Badgers football team is Camp Randall Stadium. It is the 4th-oldest college football stadium in the country built in 1917 which can seat more than eighty thousand spectators. Camp Randall is also recognized since its student section is regarded as one of the finest in all of college football. The stadium presents many invigorating traditions including "Jump Around", which is the House of Pain song presented as part of a well-known student celebration that takes place at the end of the third quarter of every home game. At the end of every game, the Marching Band of the University renders a mesmerizing performance of its "Fifth Quarter".

Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball is on record as the team with a winning streak. It has succeeded to the Final Four twice in its history. The first time was in 1941 and the second time was as recent as 2000.
