The Winnipeg Football Club now known as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is one of the most important and influential teams of the CFL. It has its own niche in Manitoba's history dating back to 1936. The team’s profile boasts of 21 Grey Cup appearances from 1935 -1990, coming out triumphant ten times. The Bombers had a successful career and a number Hall of Fame performers that had made its Blue and Gold uniform shine many times. However the time period from 1952 to 1962 is regarded as their Golden Age. Star players and Hall of Famers, Jack Jacobs, Ches McCance, Tom Casey, Buddy Tinsley and Dick Huffman formed the solid veteran core of the Bombers. Under their Head Coach Bud Grant, won 75 games out of 96 during these years and four Grey Cup wins.
The retirement of the winning core lead to the down time of the Bombers that started in1966 and lasted until1980. With the league dominated by teams from Regina, Edmonton and Calgary the team fought its way back up with another strong core. This unit allowed the team to enjoy a post-season success after a long time. Names such as Dieter Brock, John Bonk, Don Jonas, Mike Holmes and Jim Washington beamed a part of the roster. The bombers re-emerged from 1982-1994, and went up to 12 Division Finals and five Grey Cups. The team’s interrelations and connection with fans grew as the team resurfaced each season with a bolder and better team play.
The team has a mediocre profile throughout the Milt Stegall era that lasted from 1995 to 2007. Stegall was a very strong player however, his strength solely could not hold the team together for long. With the end of this era a new era for the team began in 2010 when Paul LaPolice came in as the head coach and began working on individual players, team strength and unity. The results of this were seen in the 2011 season when the Bombers completely reversed their divisional standings; they moved from last place to the first place claiming a record of 10–8 record. As a reward the team earned eight players that made it CFL’s East Division All-Star Team in 2011.
The Bombers have a very big and loyal following. It supports them on field and off field as well. Join them to buck the Bombers this season with your tickets in hand.
