The History

The Western & Southern Cincinnati Tennis Masters, also known as the Cincinnati Masters is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world today. It has always been played in Cincinnati which makes it the only tennis tournament in the world that is still being played in the same city where its inaugural edition was held.

The Cincinnati Masters traces its roots back to a time when even there was no Rose Bowl or the Davis Cup. The tournament kicked off proceedings all the way back in the year 1899 and was known as “The Cincinnati Open” back then.

The First Tournament

The first edition of the Western & Southern Cincinnati Tennis Masters was held in the year 1899 at the Avondale Athletic Club. This is where the Xavier University is situated right now. During that time two types of tennis tournaments were played. One was open to players from only the state where the event was being held while the other one consisted of players from the entire country. The Cincinnati Open invited players from all over the country.

36 players took part in the men’s draw and in the end it was Nat Emerson who clinched the first ever Cincinnati Open. On the women’s side of things, it was Myrtle McAteer from Pittsburgh who won the championship.

Playing Surface & Venues

The very first Western & Southern Cincinnati Tennis Masters was played on a clay court and that remained the case for the most part till 1979. The playing surface was then changed to hardcourt and it continues till today.

As far as the venues are concerned, the Western & Southern Cincinnati Tennis Masters has moved around the city a few times since its inaugural event in 1899. The Avondale Athletic Club is where the tournament was held till 1902. In 1903, it was relocated to the Cincinnati Tennis Club. It remained there till 1972 and in 1974, the tournament shifted to the Cincinnati Convention Center. It later moved to the Coney Island Amusement Park which resulted in its huge popularity. Mason became the new host in 1979 and continues to be so.

The Record Setters

A lot of legendary male tennis players have taken part in the Western & Southern Cincinnati Tennis Masters over the years but it is the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer who stands at the top of the ladder with the most Cincinnati Masters titles to his name.
