The Washington National Gold Club caters to golf team while the Husky Pool home and the Weyerhaeuser King Country Aquatic Center in Federal Way are accessed by the swimming team. The alumni, sports teams and the students of University of Washington are called Huskies. Before 1922, the mascot of the school was "Sun Dodger" which was replaced by the husky. The sporting and special events of the school are further enhanced with the costumed "Harry the Husky" adding value. Apart from this, another mascot called "Dubs" has been leading the UW football team onto the field. In 1892, the school adopted colors of gold and purple which resulted out of student vote.

Washington football teams remain unbeaten continuously in sixty-three successive games from 1907 to 1917. This is a record as per NCAA Division I-A. The teams came out as winners in 39 games under the seasoned guidance of Coach Gil Dobie whose career concluded with an impressive 58-0-3 record in 1916. The team continued undefeated till 1925 and it was only Alabama which overcame them in the Rose Bowl with a score of 21-20. Coach Jim Owens led the team to a remarkable finish of 10-1 in 1960 and the team won its second successive Rose Bowl where they defeated national champion Minnesota 17-7. In 1975, Don James took over as the head coach and infused a new winning spirit making them dominate at the national front with a 153-57-2 record.

The Huskies appeared in the Rose Bowl in 1981 against Michigan. There they outdid Iowa with a score of 28-0 the next year. After this a two-year hiatis followed. Washington scored an 11-1 record beating Oklahoma 28-17 and won the Orange Bowl. The Washington Husky football team formed in 1991 is considered the best and the best in college football history. The team attained an average score of 42-9 in regular season and remained undefeated. This included wins over No. 7 California and No. 9 Nebraska. The Huskies won its seventh Rose Bowl and finished with an 11-1 record. The 2009 team was coached by Steve Sarkisian making them gain a 42-43 victory over Idaho.

A sport that has a longstanding tradition at the University of Washington is rowing which dates back to 1901. The 1936 Summer Olympics (Berlin) established the Washington men's crew as a prominent team in the international scene. The team secured the gold medal by defeating the Italian and German crews which made Adolf Hitler glare since he was also attending the game. Another time when the Huskies earned a marvelous win was when they defeated the Soviet team on their own soil who were the world champion rowers then. Even though those were the times of Cold War, the American team earned a standing ovation by the Russian crowd. The Huskies have secured fifteen individual Olympic gold medals, two silver and five bronze besides winning twelve national titles. The women's team is also not behind and has won two individual Olympic gold medals and eleven national titles.
