The US Senior Open golf competition has a series of very distinct and strict rules. These are mostly concerned with player-eligibility for the competition. The rules do not allow anyone younger than fifty years of age to compete. Amateur players who wish to play must still be amateurs on the opening day to qualify for the competition. All the remaining rules simply dictate which players are exempt from qualifying for the Open. These players can simply join without having to go through a preliminary selection process. Players who have won the Open once are exempt from qualifying. This also extends to winners of PGA events at any point in the prior five years to a US Open. Another rule dictates that anyone who has won a major championship at any point in the past ten years is also exempt from qualifying. The list includes exemptions for winners of many other competitive golfing events.
To date, the US Senior Open has two record holders, Hale Irwin and Fred Funk. Irwin had a record aggregate score of two-hundred and sixty-seven in the 2000 US Senior Open golf championship. Funk had a -20 par in the 2009 competition. The oldest champion in the history of the US Senior Open was Allen Doyle. He won the 2006 Open at fifty-eight years of age. The current reigning champion is Roger Chapman.
