Tennis fans all over the world wait for this time of the year when tennis super stars play against each other in the final Grand Slam tournament; the US Open Tennis Championship.

Each year, the US Open is chronologically last of four major Grand Slam tennis championships and follows the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. It is a reformed continuation of what was once the US National Championship and has been held annually in the months of August and September in Queens, New York City ever since 1987. A true measure of will, determination and commitment to the sport, the US Open spans over a period of two weeks and holds five different categories of events to include players who wish to participate.  Singles and doubles for men and women, mixed doubles and matches for seniors, juniors and even wheelchair players are held as a part of the tournament.

What once used to be an entertainment event for a selective few belonging to the elite has now become a tournament for almost 600 professional tennis players. These players not only compete for the esteemed title but also compete for prize money equivalent to almost US $1.5 million for each singles tournament winner.  As the history of the title goes, the US National Championship initially just catered to men and that too, had to be club member of the US National Lawn Tennis Association.

Women National Singles Championship eventually paved it way through and began in 1887 at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. The system used to be a lot different from 1884 to 1911, when the defending champion was automatically entered into the final next year. This, however, changed when the tournament moved to New York in 1915. Later, in 1968, the ‘open’ era began; the US Open was conceived with the merging of all five events.  The first year, a total of 63 women and 96 men participated in the tournament as it became open for professionals to participate in.

The US Open is unique in its way of incorporating tie-breaks in the game. Unlike the other three tournaments, the US Open even tie-breaks the last set, whereas the rest tie-break every set except the last and the players have to  continue playing until there is a two-game lead.

The US Open also has a new instant replay review calls policy that was introduced in 2006 and is based on the extremely efficient ‘Hawk Eye’ computer system. This policy allows every player to challenge the umpire’s decision thrice per set and once more during a tie-break. In case an existing challenge proves to be in the player’s favor, he/she gets to keep all four challenges.  However, the number of challenges is reduced if the existing challenge fails and the original ruling is sustained. The ‘Hawk Eye’ system enables the game to remain extremely fair as it is accurate up to five millimeters.
The US Open is played on a deco turf surface that has less friction than pure hard courts and therefore produces lower bounce. The main court at the ‘Arther Ashe Stadium’, named after the first US Open men’s final winner ‘Arthur Ashe’, can seat almost 22,500 people. Additionally, all US Open courts are television friendly, owing to the way they’ve been lighted.

Some of the most popular US Open winners include Roger Federer, Pete Smapras and Jimmy Connors, who have each won the title five times.  So for all the tennis fans out there, this is an opportunity to watch the gods of tennis play to the best of their abilities and compete for the final Grand Slam title. Pressure is high, the heat in on and nerves are at their edge!
