The Players Championship, known earlier as Tournament Players Championship, is a yearly golf tournament by PGA Tour. The first event took place was in 1974 in Georgia at the Atlanta Country Club, from whereon it was moved to Fort Worth in Texas at Colonial Country Club a year later. In 1976 it was moved yet again to Ft. Lauderdale in Florida at the Inverrary Country Club, following which the event was relocated to Florida where it was first held at Ponte Vedra Beach and then on the Oceanside Course of Sawgrass Country Club. In 1982, the event was taken to the TPC’ Stadium Course right across from the previous location, where the event has since been hosted.
 
The Players Championship is famous for offering the biggest prize fund among all other golf tournaments, sometimes being called the Fifth Major. Between 2004 and 2006, the tournament prize was set at eight million, which was increased by another million the next year and in 2008 it was set to nine and a half million dollars. The gold field normally includes the best fifty golfers from among those sited in world rankings, though unlike the three major tournaments that are held within the USA, it is not credited as an official happening on European Tour. The tournament’s winner is awarded an allocation of eighty points that are counted towards his ranking in Official World Golf, which in turn is the most that can be allocated to any golf event except the majors that award a hundred point to its winners.
