Abe Saperstein founded the Harlem Globetrotters and was also its first manager. It was Saperstein who was in favor of attaching Harlem with the Globetrotters. He thought it would add mystique to the team. Harlem in those days was the center of African-American culture.

Popularity Off-Field

In the 1970s and 80s, the Harlem Globetrotters enjoyed immense media limelight. The Harlem Globetrotters cartoon show that aired on CBS earned some of the highest ratings in the history of Saturday morning television.

In 1985, Lynette Woodard, the Olympic gold medalist, basketball player, joined the Globetrotters and became the first female Globetrotter. With this, she also became the first female to play on a men’s professional basketball team. This paved the path for the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), which was founded in 1996.

In addition…

The Harlem Globetrotters are credited with popularizing the slam dunk, the figure-eight weave, fast break and the forward and point guard positions.

Their illustrious history and contributions to the game of basketball aside, the Harlem Globetrotters remain an entertainment loved by both kids and adults alike.
