When Big Papi announced he was going to retire at the end of the season, speculation immediately turned to potential replacements for the Red Sox icon. Numerous players have been linked to the Red Sox over the course of the season, but there are only a few names which seem like actual replacements for Ortiz.

The Toronto Blue Jays’ Edwin Encarnacion is one such name. Encarnacion has a wonderful record at Fenway Park; he has struck twelve home runs, driven in thirty seven runs and his average in forty four career games at the ballpark is 0.296. Encarnacion will be out of contract at the end of this season and the Red Sox would not mind having his firepower on their side.

Another player being linked to the Boston side is Jose Bautista, who also has a superb record at Fenway Park. The slugger has belted twenty two homeruns, driven in fifty one runs and has an average of .277 in sixty games at Fenway Park. With Ortiz retiring, Bautista could very well be the player to take the Red Sox forward. He is also out of contract at the end of the season.

The third possible player being linked to the Red Sox is Mark Teixeira, the Yankees’ first baseman. Despite the fact that his offensive stats have slipped, Teixeira still remains a supremely talented first baseman and Boston could very well have Hanley Ramirez and Teixeira shared DH and first base duties next season to account for Ortiz’s retirement.

It’s going to be a special occasion when the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox collide. Both sides know what it takes to win big games so, to watch them lock horns will be exhilarating for any fan of baseball. If you too are waiting for these two sides to slug it out, then book your Tampa Bay Rays Vs Boston Red Sox tickets and enjoy the game from the stands.

Get to know the Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays were incepted in 1998. The foundation of this team was laid in 1960s when former civic leader and St. Petersburg Times publisher, Jack Lake suggested that St. Petersburg should have its own Major League baseball team. In the 1980s and 1990s, many local businessmen tried to acquire a baseball team but all in vain. In 1990, The Florida Suncoast Dome was constructed in St. Petersburg to lure a new baseball team but the city had some competition as two groups, one in Tampa and the other in Sarasota were seeking for an expansion team that same year.

In 1992, the owner of the San Francisco Giants, Bob Lurie decided to sell his team to a group of investors based out of Tampa Bay. The group was led by Vince Naimoli. However, MLB owners stopped this move under pressure from San Francisco officials and the Giants were sold to a group who kept them in the city.

On March 9, 1995, a new expansion franchise was finally awarded to Naimoli’s Tampa Bay group and three years later, the Tampa Bay Rays played their first season.

The Tampa Bay Rays begin to play

The Tampa Bay Rays struggled to make it past the regular season in the first ten years. However, in 2008, they surprised everyone when they not only qualified for the playoffs but went on to defeat the White Sox and the Red Sox in the ALDS and the ALCS respectively. But that’s as far they went as they were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series game, 4-1.

The Rays really began to hit their stride for the first time in the second half of the 2000s. They went on to win the East Division title in 2008 and then put the icing on the cake by clinching the AL Pennant the same year. Two years, later they won their second division crown.

The Boston Red Sox were initially called the Boston Americans. The team made its presence felt early on by winning the World Series title in 1903 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-3.They changed their name to the Red Sox soon afterwards and went on to win four more World Series championships in 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918.

Then they had to face the famous Curse of the Bambino and failed to win another World Series for eighty six years. The jinx ended in 2004 when the Red Sox clinched their sixth World Series.
