From 1990 onwards to 1992, this team was known as the Cincinnatic Cyclone then as the Birmingham Bulls until 2001 and from 2001 to 2005, as the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies.
 
Stockton Thunder first joined the East Coast Hockey League back in 1990 as an expansion franchise. As the Cincinnati Cyclones, this team reached the Riley Cup Playoffs in their very first two seasons as well as reaching the semifinals. After then, the team played as the Birmingham Bulls and made it to the playoffs a record five times in nine seasons, even reaching the Riley Cup semifinals in the 1993 to 1994 season. It was as the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies that this team saw success rapidly in the ECHL. In 2002, the team reached the Conference Finals in the Kelly Cup Playoffs and won the Northeast Division championship. The team then went on to win the Kelly Cup after brutally defeating the Columbia Inferno by four games to one.
 
The Stockton Thunder were then formed and in 2007, the team hosted the ECHL All Star Game in 2008 with three Stockton Thunder players, Ryan MacMurchy, Andy Contois and Brad Farynuk chosen to be a part of the All Star team in the National Conference. The National Conference then went on to defeat the American Conference by 10-7, spelling yet another marvelous win for Stockton Thunder.
