The South Carolina Gamecocks’ basketball team started off as a member of the NCAA’s Southern Conference. The team qualified for and won 4 regular season championship tournaments between 1927 and 1945. The team also took home the Conference Championship in 1933. After a rough patch, it was in 1965 under the leadership of head coach, Frank McGuire that the team enjoyed its most successful tenure. Not only was the team undefeated in 1970 but it also claimed 1971’s ACC Tournament Championship.
From the 80s to the Present Day
Another rough patch came for the Gamecocks as it became an independent team during the late seventies. It was finally in 1983 that the team was taken on by NCAA on probation. The Gamecocks joined the Metro Conference and head coach, George Felton guided the team to achieve a successful 87-62 score in between 1987 and 1991. It was in 1992 that the team became a member of the SEC. Since then it has made 3 NCAA tournament appearances and won the 2009 SEC Conference Championship.
