The Hawaii bowl game first took place in 2002 and was sponsored by ‘ConAgra Foods’. In the years that followed ‘Sheraton Hotels and Resorts Hawaii’ took the responsibility of sponsoring the event. Teams from the Mountain West Conference play against teams from the Pacific- 12 conference or from the Conference USA. The Aloha stadium, which hosts the annual bowl game, was built in 1975 to replace the Honolulu Stadium. With an approximate cost of thirty seven million dollars, the stadium is home to the Hawaii Warriors Football team. The playing field is known as the Hawaiian Airlines Field. The stadium was a very innovative design that featured four movable sections that could be configured in various ways to suit the occasion. The multi-purpose venue could be used as a baseball field when in a diamond configuration, as a soccer field and even as a concert venue when configured in a triangle shape. However, due to the high cost of maintenance the field was locked in a permanent football field position. Hawaii has a record of three wins and as many losses in the six appearances it has made in the Hawaii bowl. The Conference USA has had the most number of wins in the bowl game when considering wins by conference. With six wins and three losses the Conference USA has an impressive winning percentage of point six seven. The runners up to C-USA are the Western Athletic Conference with ten representations. In the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl held in 2012, Fresno State of the Mountain West competed against Southern Methodist University of Conference USA. This was the seventh meeting between the two teams. The SMU Mustangs defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs, 43-10, despite most analysts predicting a convincing win for the Bulldogs. The resounding win gave the Mustangs their second Sheraton Hawaii Bowl title in four years. The game was a memorable win for the Mustangs as their phenomenal performance earned them a tie for an NCAA record for the most interceptions returned for touchdowns in a season.
Sheraton Hotels and resorts has entered into a multi-faceted and multi-year contract with ESPN regional Television to remain as the main title sponsor of the Hawaii Bowl.
