The 2013 championship game featured the Auburn Tigers from the Western Division and the Missouri Tigers, a relatively inexperienced team in the final round of the conference. The Auburn Tigers carried forward the momentum and confidence they got from defeating Alabama in the SEC West title game, to see off the Missouri Tigers. On their way to the SEC crown, the Auburn Tigers not only caused a massive upset by beating their long standing rivals the Alabama Crimson Tide, they also marked one of the greatest turnarounds in NCAA history as they overcame their worst performance in sixty years they had put up in the previous season. In other words, they won the championship game only a year after they had chalked up a winless SEC record. Although the Tigers advanced to the BCS Bowl Game, they lost to the Florida State Seminoles.

Even though the Auburn Tigers lost the BCS Bowl Game, teams from the SEC are very familiar with the national championship game. In fact from 2006 to 2013 a team from the SEC has been a regular feature in the BCS Championship game. Florida, Auburn, Alabama and LSU each made it to the national Championship game, twice in the eight years. The Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide won both of their outings, while LSU and Auburn won once each. As a result in the past eight years, the team that has won the SEC Championship game has been crowned as national champions six times. Considering an historic overview, the Alabama Crimson Tide has won the most National Championships, representing the SEC. They have won ten titles since 1957.

Since the inaugural SEC Championship game in 1992, the Florida Gators have made the most number of appearances in the final game. They have played ten times and have won seven times, making it the program with the most number of SEC crowns. Alabama trails behind Florida with eight appearances, out of which they have won four times. LSU is tied in second place with Alabama with four SEC wins. While the top half of the SEC is extremely competitive, the bottom third is way off from the mark. Kentucky, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss have not made any appearance in an SEC Championship Game.

SEC Championship game is played in the Georgia Dome. When the Georgia Dome was completely constructed, it was the largest domed structure in the world (Millennium Dome and Docklands Stadium are larger structures now). The Georgia Dome serves, which serves as the home of the NCAA's Georgia State Panthers and the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, has a capacity of nearly seventy five thousand spectators. Since 1994, the dome has hosted all the SEC Championship games to decide the conference winner.

This year it will be interesting to see which teams emerge as the winners of the West and East division, to play in the final game.
