One baseball team that has been shining on the Major League baseball for quite some time now is the Seattle Mariners. Seattle Mariners were founded in 1977 after the relocation of Seattle Pilots to Milwaukee Wisconsin. The team is currently owned by Nintendo of America which also owns two other teams Toronto Blue Jays and Atlanta Braves under corporate ownership, general manager of the team is Jack Zduriencik and manager is Eric Wedge. From their debut till 1999, the Mariners played all their home games at the scenic King County Domed Stadium or famously known as Kingdome but since then they have shifted to the very spacious Safeco Field which has a capacity to seat over 47000 spectators. The official colors of the team are navy blue, metallic silver, white and northwest green. The official mascot is the Mariner Moose which can be seen walking during all Mariner games and the team is nicknamed The M’s.
In the year 2000, Seattle Mariners performed quite well as they stood 2nd in the American League West Division and won the American League Division Series by beating the very strong Chicago White Sox 3-0, they lost the Championship series to New York Yankees by 4-1. The year of 2001 proved to the best ever season for the Mariners as they made a record by scoring 116 wins and equalizing the record of Chicago Cubs which they made in 1906. Mariners in this season stood 1st in the AL West Division and again won the AL Division series by beating Cleveland Indians 3-2 but again lost to New York Yankees by 4-1 in the AL Championship Series and went 4-6 in the playoffs.
In 2004, the team stood 4th in the Division but one of their star players Ichiro Suzuki shined by breaking an 84 year old record of hits, Suzuki scored an amazing 262 hits. The year of 2008 proved to the worst ever season for Seattle Mariners as they lost over 100 games in a season this was their most awful performance since 1983 and they were the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs. In 2009, Ichiro Suzuki shined by scoring yet another record of most consecutive 200-hit. In 2010 Suzuki again scored 200 hits with .300 and this led him to play in the famous Major League Baseball All-Star Game and also won the prestigious Rawlings Golden Glove Award. Some other famous award winning players who have played for the Mariners are Felix Hernandez, Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr. Five players of Seattle Mariners have been inducted in the prestigious Baseball Hall of Fame namely Pat Gillick, Goose Gossage, Rickey Henderson, Dick Williams and Gaylord Perry. David Niehaus was also inducted in the Hall of Fame but mainly due to his work as a great broadcaster for the Mariners.
