The franchise was founded in 1883 as The New York Gothams. John B Day, the tobacconist, got together with Jim Mutrie, an amateur baseball player himself and laid foundation for the team which later on got an entry into the National League in 1883. More than of half of the players which made it into the Gothams were ditched by Troy Trojans, as an inheritance. The name was changed to New York Giants in 1888. The incident which resulted in changing the name of the team is an interesting one. Mutrie, delighted by his team’s performance against Philadelphia Phillies marched straight into the dressing and referred to the team as Giants. After the team relocated to San Francisco, they became the San Francisco Giants. AT & T Park plays host to all home games of the Giants ever since 2000.
Giants have many nicknames. The fans like calling their heroes The Orange and Black, whereas they also go with other nicknames like the Jints, The G Men and Los Gigantes. The G Men won their first big game in 1888 and then again in 1889 in the form of a couple of NL Pennant titles. From time to time the team continued to give their stellar performance on the pitch over and over again. Between the years of 1911 to 1913, the team managed to rule the NL Pennant arena for 3 straight years! They repeated this history again ten years later. They have won a total of 20 NL Pennant titles so far along with 6 West Division titles. With 5 World Series title wins, the team is listed amongst super achievers.
