Established in 1997 in the Salt Lake City, the San Antonio Silver Stars were created as the Utah Starzz. It was amongst one of the eight original teams that were part of the Women’s National Basketball Association. The team was named after the old American Basketball Association franchise titled Utah Stars. A year after the formation of the Starzz, it was included in the Women’s National Basketball Association’s draft. In the draft, center player Margo Dydek became a member of the San Antonio Silver Stars, who went onto becoming the tallest player in the history of WNBA. The basketball team started attracting viewership from 2000 onwards when it started producing winning records. Making it to the playoffs in 2001 and 2002, the team competed against the Sacramento Monarchs and the Los Angeles Sparks in the semi-finals.

At the end of the 2002 season, National Basketball Association was seen divesting all of its Women’s National Basketball Association’s teams. The Starzz didn’t want to fold and were bought by San Antonio Spur’s owner, Peter Holt. With this the team relocated to San Antonio and changed its name to San Antonio Silver Stars. It also changed its official team colors to black and silver, similar colors that were used by the San Antonio Spurs. The name and color changes also brought forth player changes as Coretta Brown and Natalie Williams were seen leaving to join Indiana Fever. Their places were taken by Gwen Jackson and Sylvia Crawley. 2004 also saw Margo Dydek leaving the Stars. As Utah Starzz the team was able to score a record of 87-99 for the years 1997 and 2002. From 2003 to 2006, the team as the San Antonio Silver Stars was able to establish a record score of 41-88.

The following year brought several changes for the team as it was seen acquiring several successful players such as Sandora Irvin, Ruth Riley, Becky Hammon, Camille Little, Vickie Johnson, Marie Ferdinand-Harris, Sophia Young, Kendra Wecker and Shanna Crossley. The newly established team started competing in WNBA’s Western Conference. In 2007, the Stars were able to make their way to the playoffs for the first time ever since it relocated to San Antonio. Winning two out of three games, the team was able to advance into the Western Conference Finals. However, they lost the game to Phoenix Mercury with a score of 102-100. The following year saw the San Antonio Silver Stars gaining momentum as the team went onto establishing the best record in the conference. The Stars were able to make their way to the playoffs once again beating the Sacramento Monarchs with a score of 86-81. In the finals game, the team competed against the Los Angeles Sparks and was able to defeat them with a score of 76-72 during free throws.

In 2011, the popular basketball franchise announced to become host to the 2011 Women’s Basketball National Association All-Star Game. Players such as Danielle Adams, Danielle Robinson, Sophia Young, Becky Hammon and Porsha Phillips were able to shine during the season. Adams was even awarded the Rookie of the Month award in 2011.
