Singer, songwriter, guitar player and entrepreneur Sammy Hagar hardly needs an introduction. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has been delighting audiences since the 70s and he is in no mood to slow down anytime soon. A native of Salinas, Hagar has released more than 2 dozen studio albums as well as many compilation albums, video albums and over a 100 singles.
In an illustrious career that is nearly half a century long, Hagar has proven himself to be a distinguished performer both as a solo artist and as a part of various music bands over the years. The veteran musician first became prominent as a part of hard rock band Montrose and played a major part in the group’s first two album releases.
While neither of the albums was able to rank high on any music charts, there was a fair bit of commercial success achieved. Also, many considered Montrose’s debut a solid and encouraging effort and marked the group as one to watch for the future.
Following this stint, Hagar embarked on a very successful solo career. Until 1980, the Grammy winner released one live album and 5 full-length studio albums. All these were released under the umbrella of Capitol Records. He then signed with Geffen Records and reached new heights of success and popularity.
From 1980 to 1984, Hagar put out three albums, two of which attained a Platinum certification (Standing Hampton in 1981 and VOA in 1984) from the RIAA while the other was certified Gold (Three Lock Box in 1982). Witness him delivering an electrifying stage performance by getting Sammy Hagar and the Circle tickets.
Van Halen: A Precursor to the Establishment of the Circle
In 1985, Hagar became a part of Van Halen and his addition to the lineup completely transformed the hard rock band’s fortunes. The next decade included four number 1 album releases.
It started with the release of 5150 in 1986 which was certified six times Platinum by the RIAA. Two years later, OU812 came out and went on to achieve a quadruple Platinum certification. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991) and Balance (1995) continued this run of commercial success. Both went on to achieve triple Platinum certifications from the RIAA while the former also earned Van Halen a Grammy Award for “Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal.”
Though Hagar was fully devoted to Van Halen at this time, he didn’t let his solo career take a back seat and continued to perform on his own. He released the solo album I Never Said Goodbye in 1987 during this hugely successful decade with the Pasadena-based group.
Hagar increased his solo work post-1996 and continued releasing albums and other stuff to considerable success. He also created a new band The Waboritas that was intended to be more of a backing group. A brief reunion with Van Halen followed during the mid-2000s before Hagar was formally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 as a part of Van Halen.
His fusion of heavy metal, alternative metal and hard rock genres have earned him the adulation of thousands around the world. Around this same time, the veteran artist delved into entrepreneurship and laid the foundations of his tequila business. Today, he is the owner of the Cabo Wabo chain of restaurants and tequila brand along with Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum.
Sammy Hagar and the Circle Super Group
In 2014, Hagar set up the super group called The Circle. It comprised of former band mates Michael Anthony (Van Halen) and Vic Johnson (The Waboritas) along with Jason Bonham, the son of former Led Zeppelin guitar expert John Bonham.
Sammy Hagar and the Circle released their first full-length debut album Space Between in 2019. The band continues to record music and perform together on the road while Hagar keeps working as a solo artist as well as with another band on the side.
