The Ryder Cup has a lot of prestige attached to its more than hefty purse. This competition, when incepted in 1926, was more of an exhibition match between American pros and Eastern course British PGA golfers. Since 1927 the competition has grown more serious and intense.

The idea of the Ryder Cup is believed to have been proposed by a Golf Illustrated magazine journalist James Harnett but didn’t gain much support. Later, the president of Inverness Club Sylvanus P. "SP" Jermain brought back the idea with an informal match. Samuel Ryder, a seed merchant after witnessing the whole spectacle decided to make it official. He donated a Gold Trophy making the Ryder Cup official from that day forward. The matches were initially held between the American and British Golfers which later on added participants from countries like Ireland to make it more of a European team than the British.

The Ryder Teams are some of the best golfers in the world. The Europe team consists of Top players of the European Tour and Official World Golf Rankings. Whereas the American team gives a tough competition by including eminent players of the Major championships including  Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, Open Championship, and PGA Championship.

Though the Europeans have been giving a tough competition and hold many records, like it has a record of being a five times winner of Most holes in one of all time. Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Billy Casper, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Neil Coles, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam ,José María Olazábal , Jimmy Demaret are few of the players that have outshined in the cup with impressive records.
