The Pittsburgh Steelers were incepted in the year 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates. They played their first game against the New York Giants on September 20, 1933 and lost that encounter. Name change

The Pirates were named the Pittsburgh Steelers after the 1939 season. The change of the name did not change their fortunes and the Steelers failed to win anything. That jinx ended in the 1970s in spectacular fashion.

The Pittsburgh Steelers won the division title in 1972. Two years later they won the division crown, the conference title and the Super Bowl. Their trophy cabinet now contains twenty two division titles, eight conference crowns and six Super Bowls. Their eight AFC titles put them alongside the Broncos as the second most successful side in the conference. They trail only the Pats in that regard.
