Professional ice hockey playing team, the Pittsburgh Penguins is based in Pennsylvania. The team is associated with the National Hockey League. They play form the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. When the league was expanding from six to twelve teams, the Penguins was one of the first expanding franchises to establish in 1967. The team played their home games at Civic Arena, famously called "The Igloo" because of its unique shape. They played at the arena since their establishment till the 2009–10 season ended. The Penguins began their 2010–11 NHL season in their new home arena Consol Energy Center.
The first general manager of The Penguins Jack Riley opened the first franchise preseason camp followed by the team’s first game in 1967. In 1970 and 1972, the Penguins reached the playoffs with the exceptional performance of players including Jean Pronovost, Syl Apps Jr., Keith McCreary, Ken Schinkel, Les Binkley and Bryan Watson. The team struggled and went through a hard time adjusting the right blend of team members. The Penguins came with a change in 2006 with the addition of rookie Evgeni Malkin. With a goal recorded in all of his first six games, Malkin made the modern NHL record.
