Franchise history
The Philadelphia Phillies came into existence in 1883. The team was originally called the'Quakers' and soon adopted to the change correlating it to the name of the city. The team name was changed to 'Philadelphias' but later renamed themselves as the 'Phillies' in 1891.
The franchisee has changed the home grounds several times over the course of their entire history of playing the game. Initially the team used to play at the Recreation Park. Baker Bowl became the new home ground in 1887 winning the hearts of the fans during that time period. The Phillies later moved to Connie Mack Stadium and then into Veterans Stadium. Citizens Bank is now the new home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Bob Carpenter Jr. purchased the franchisee in 1948 and introduced the concept of 'whiz kids'. The strategy allowed young players like Richie Ashbourne and Robin Roberts to be introduced to the game of major-league baseball.
Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose were the stars that finally gave the Philadelphia Phillies the first-ever World Series championship in 1980. Mike Schmidt who had also won the World Series MVP finals award due to his extraordinary 8-for-21 hitting gave the Philadelphia Phillies something to brag about for years to come. The Philadelphia Phillies made it to the playoffs for the next two consecutive years but then suddenly nosedived into the failure zone and were not able to qualify as a strong contender in the championship league.
It was not until 2001 and under the leadership and tutelage of the new manager Larry Bowa that the Philadelphia Phillies had their first winning season. New management allowed for the Philadelphia Phillies to trade the old players with fresh blood and revamp the entire lineup. Finally in 2008, the hard work and dedication of the management and players finally paid off. In 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies were able to clinch their second straight division title and defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the division series. Coles Hamels played a pivotal role in creating the successful turn of events for the team and the state.

The Philadelphia Phillies are proud of having won 5 MVP awards in their entire seasonal career. Mike Schmidt is one of the greatest legends that have ever played in the Philadelphia Phillies and has created for him a special place in the annals of baseball history. He has been awarded this prestigious prize in 1980 and 1981 as well as in 1986. Chuck Klein (1932), Jim Konstanty (1950), Ryan Howard (2006), and Jimmy Rollins (2007) all have one award to their names.
