Outback Bowl is an annual college football game that kicks off at 1:00 PM ET on the New Year Day unless 1st January is a Sunday, if so; it is shifted to the next day which is Monday. The game is organized by the Tampa Bay Bowl Association under Jim McVay's guidance. He has been serving as the President of the association since 1988.

Although the bowl did not bring in teams from different conferences in its early years, but now the match is fought between the two teams of the Big Ten Conference and the Southeastern Conference. The bowl invites the third pick team of Big Ten to play against the third pick team of the SEC. Previously, the teams from Atlantic Coast Conference have also been allowed to battle against other regional teams. The matches are played at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. This multipurpose stadium has a seating capacity of around 65,657 people.
From 1986 to 1994, the Outback Bowl was more famous as Hall of Fame Bowl but in 1995, it was renamed as Outback Bowl due to its new restaurant chain sponsor, Outback Steakhouse.
