Before 1892, college sports were not allowed in OSU owing to the directives of the then principal. However, all that changed when the new president of the school John Bloss took over. Ushering in an era of college football, William Bloss who was the president’s son, fielded the first Oregon State football team and also played on it as a quarterback.

An Auspicious Start

The first game that the Beavers participated in was an away game at Albany College. The Beavers routed the home team 63-0.  If ever there was any doubt about the future of the sport in Oregon, the result put that to rest once and for all. College football had finally arrived in OSU and it was there to stay.

College football has flourished in OSU over the years owing to the success of the Beavers. During its early days, the team was a part Northwest Intercollegiate Association from 1902 till 1914. In 1964, the Beavers were included in the Pacific-12 Conference where it continues to play till today. In the periods when it was not part of any conference, the Beavers participated in the capacity of an independent school team.
