Orange Bowl is an American football bowl game among colleges that takes place once every year in Miami Gardens at the Sun Life Stadium. The game has been held regularly since early 1935, and only recently celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary in 2009, and is a Bowl Championship Series member. The event alongside Sugar Bowl, are ranked amongst the oldest bowl games in the US, just after Rose Bowl that was played in 1902. In 2005 and 2001, Orange Bowl was the host of the Championship Game of BCS Nationals. Since 2006, however, BCS National Championship Game was made an independent event that is arranged by the local organization of the bowl, which is one week after the bowl game of New Year’s Day. Under the present format of BCS, the Orange Bowl Committee was chosen to host two games, both of which were hold in 2009; first the 2009 Orange Bowl and then the 2009 NCS National Championship Game, both of which were played at LandShark Stadium.
Sun Life Stadium, Orange Bowl’s current home ground, has a seating capacity of over seventy-five thousand for football games. It was designed by the HOK Sport architects and built with a construction cost of a hundred and fifteen million US dollars. Owned by Stephen M. Ross and H. Wayne Huizenga, the stadium opened in 1987 and has since hosted many major sport events including five Super Bowls, four BCS National Championship Games and two World Series. The stadium has also hosted the second round of World Baseball Classic in 2009.
As of 2007, Orange Bowl has also hosted the well-known Atlantic Coast Conference championship, except when they are already busy in the national championship match and has already applied the brand of Home of ACC Champion. The match-up of 2012 ended with West Virginia Mountaineers who took the Big East title of 2011 by beating ACC champion team Clemson Tigers with a score of seventy to thirty-three. West Virginia is known to have set many records in Orange Bowl such as scoring the highest points any team has made in the history of a bowl game. For many of its game features, Orange Bowl tickets are considered to be a fun treat among bowl football fans.
Officially Orange Bowl is called Discover Orange Bowl as Discover Financial was declared to be the event’s title sponsor in August 2010 as per the four-year agreement. The game has also been named FedEx Orange Bowl through 1989till 2010 due to FedEx’s role in sponsoring the game during that time. Since 2010-2011, event has been carried on by ESPN, as a replacement of Fox following four seasons. The game has also been aired by ABC during 1999 and 2006, on NBC between 1964 and 1994 and on CBS from 1995 to 1998.
