The Oklahoma State University has been blessed with an amazing athletics department which has earned quiet a lot of respect for the university and has won countless major titles over the years. Called the Cowboys and Cowgirls, their sports program has accumulated the fourth highest number of national championships in the country.
The Cowboys Take Their First Steps
The Cowboys' first varsity sports team was their football side, which started playing in 1901. Before 1957, the university's name had been the Oklahoma A&M, and as such they were known as the Aggies. In 1923 however, Frank Eaton, the popular cowboy and author, led a parade for Armistice Day which was much appreciated by the students of the university.
Eaton agreed to be their mascot and soon “Pistol Pete” became so famous that people started calling their sports team the Cowboys, a nickname that remains to this day.
The Cowboys Come to the Party
The Cowboys have manage to dominate several different varsity sports over the years. They have managed to win fifty one national championships to date, with thirty four of those coming in wrestling. That is followed by ten in golf, four in cross country, two in basketball and one in baseball.
