This conference got divided in 1928, and the Oklahoma University kept aligned with the teams that eventually created the Big Six Conference. More schools were added into the conference over the next three decades, and several name changes were experienced. Finally, in 1996, the Big 12 Conference was the name decided for the conference and is still the same till date.

The sports for which the Sooners are most popular are football, baseball, Men's basketball and gymnastics, Women's basketball and rowing, and wrestling.
