A Look Back

Oklahoma City has a long association with the professional side of baseball that traces its roots back to the year 1904. That was the year when the Metropolitans were incepted as the city's first ever team. The team however changed quite a few names over the years. They began to be called Indians in the year 1909 before reverting back to the Mets the next year. In 1911, however; the name was changed to Indians yet again.

Oklahoma City was home to the Senators in the year 1912. After a one year gap of there being no team in the city, Boosters became the team of Oklahoma City in 1914. The title, Senators made a comeback for 1915 and 1916 while the Boosters name returned in the year 1917. The team was renamed as Oklahoma City Indians in 1918 and it stuck all the way till 1957.

The Oklahoma City Dodgers are Formed

The Oklahoma City Dodgers were then formed in the year 1962. The Houston Buffaloes were members of the American Association and they were bought by the Houston Colt. 45, who would eventually become the Houston Astros. The Astros decided to relocate the team. Spec Richardson was the GM of the Buffs at that time and he set up a meeting with the officials of Oklahoma City as well as the Boosters franchise. The idea was to move the Buffs to Oklahoma City. An agreement was reached and they began to play as the Oklahoma City 89ers in 1962.

The Astros then sold the side to P.C. Dixon who was a businessman from Tulsa in the year 1970. Three years later, they signed an agreement with the Cleveland Indians to become their minor league affiliates. Between 1976 and 1982, they became affiliates of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Moving On

The 89ers then became the minor league affiliates of the Texas Rangers in the year 1983 and as a result of that they donned new uniforms and new colors. Even the name of the team was changed to RedHawks in 1998. That was also the year the franchise made a move to the Pacific Coast League. The name was changed to the Oklahoma City RedHawks in 2010 and to its current one, the Oklahoma City Dodgers in 2015.

The Titles

The Oklahoma City Dodgers have enjoyed a lot of success. They won the league title just a year after their formation in 1963 and also clinched a division crown that season. Another division and league double followed in 1965.

They had to come to terms with some tough times after that but bounced back at the end of the 1970s by winning their third league title in 1979. They won another division title in 1985. The Dodgers really hit their stride in the 1990s, winning a division title and a league championship in 1992, followed by another league win in 1996.

The Dodgers then got their hands on another division title in 1999 and proceeded to win their maiden conference crown later that season. The next decade also started off very successfully. They won three division titles between 2002 and 2005. In 2008, they won both the conference and division titles. That was followed by another three division triumphs between 2010 and 2015. The Dodgers were not done and proceeded to clinch another division and conference double in the year 2016.

The stage is now set for the Dodgers to win their first league title in more than two decades. It has been a long wait and there are signs that the wait might be coming to an end.
