At the Oakland Athletics Safeco Field, the city’s professional MLB team will be competing. Formed in 1901, Oakland Athletics was initially based in Philadelphia. Due to their location, the team was then known as Philadelphia Athletics. It joined the American League in 1901 and to this day remains its member. This makes the Athletics one of the eight original charter franchises that were founded at the time of the American League’s creation. The team has been named after the athletic clubs that were founded in Philadelphia in the 19th century. Nicknamed “the A’s,” the Athletics are also known as “the Elephants.”

As Philadelphia Athletics, the baseball team has bagged five World Series titles from 1910 to 1913 and 1929 to 1930. During its term in Philadelphia, the team produced Hall of Fame inductees Frank Baker, Chief Bender, Lefty Grove and Jimmie Foxx. It was in 1955 that the Philadelphia based team relocated to Kansas City and became known as Kansas City Athletics. During this time, the team’s career remained uneventful and it was finally in 1968, that the baseball club started picking up pace. After moving to Oakland to become Oakland Athletics, the team won 4 World Series titles, 6 AL Pennants, 15 West Division wins and a Wild Card berth.
