Get to Know the Stars
The Dallas Stars came into existence in 1967 as the Minnesota North Stars. Based in Bloomington, they were one of the expansion franchises that joined the NHL that year. They played as the Minnesota North Stars until 1993, at which point they relocated to Dallas and were renamed as the Dallas Stars.
The Stars play their home games at the American Airlines Center (AAC), an arena they share with the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA. The AAC has been their home since 2001. Previously, the Reunion Arena hosted all of the Stars’ home games since they moved to Dallas before the start of the 1993-94 season.
In terms of honors, the Stars were Stanley Cup winners in 1999. Other than that, they have won 8 Division titles, 2 Conference crowns and 2 Presidents’ Trophies. The period from mid-1990s to mid-2000s was the most successful in the Stars’ history. With the exception of their Division triumph in 2016, all other title wins came during this period.
The Stars were the undisputed kings of their Division from 1997 till 2001, winning 5 titles on the trot. Some great players have played for the side from D-Town over the years. These include Hall of Famers Joe Nieuwendyk, Neal Broten, Mike Modano, Brett Hull and Ed Belfour among others. Get your Dallas Stars Stanley Cup tickets to watch the current crop as they try to build their own legacies with the franchise.
The Finest Hour
Undoubtedly the Stars’ finest moment as a franchise came in 1999 when they won their maiden Stanley Cup. It was the culmination of a few years of sheer hard work and determination to get to the summit of professional hockey.
After winning their first Division title in 1997, the Stars surprisingly lost in the Conference quarterfinals before suffering Conference Finals heartbreak a year later. But in 1999, they were not to be denied. A barnstorming run to the Division title continued in the postseason as the Stars swept aside all challengers to lift the Stanley Cup, with only the Colorado Avalanche taking them to 7 games in the Conference Finals.
The Stars in the Postseason
The Dallas Stars Stanley Cup Playoffs record is impressive against most teams. The St. Louis Blues are their most frequent opponents. Both teams have had over a dozen encounters in the postseason. The Edmonton Oilers and the Chicago Blackhawks have also come up fairly regularly against the Stars.
The Stars enjoy healthy winning percentages against the Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, and the San Jose Sharks. They will be hoping for similar results against the Predators as they look to make the most of this playoffs opportunity after not qualifying for the last couple of years.
