A New Beginning for Hockey Fans in Columbus

The state of Ohio had not had a National Hockey League franchise since the days of the Cleveland Barons. That side played between 1976 and 1978. The Blue Jackets however did not replace the Barons instead they took the place of the Columbus Chill who were members of the ECHL. They were part of the city' hockey landscape between 1991 and 1999. The Columbus Chill used to call the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum their home and also managed to sellout a whopping eighty three games straight, which was a record for minor league hockey at that point in time.

In November of 1996, five investors came together and incepted the Columbus Hockey Limited. They applied to the NHL for an expansion side. At the point, a referendum was being held in the city for the construction of a new hockey arena in the city through public money. To assess the bid, Gary Bettman, the NHL Commissioner went to Columbus to meet members of the civil fraternity. Bettman was told that if the bid is not successful, the arena would not be built. John H. McConnell one of the five people who had submitted the bid gave a guarantee that the arena will be built regardless of the referendum result.

The referendum failed but Nationwide came into the picture and announced they will provide the money to construct the hockey venue. So in June of 1997, the NHL made the official announcement that Columbus would get an expansion team.

The Blue Jackets Start Their NHL Journey In 2000

The Columbus Blue Jackets made their debut in the NHL in the 2000-2001 season and finished fifth in the division. They did not qualify for the playoffs for quite a few seasons though. That run ended in the 2008-2009 season when they finished fourth in the division and recorded their first winning season too. The Blue Jackets went all the way to the Conference Quarterfinals where they were swept 0-4 by the Detroit Red Wings.

The Blue Jackets' next postseason trip came in the 2013-2014 season but it unfortunately ended in the First Round when they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-4. They had to wait another two seasons before they could return to the playoffs again though.

A Hat-trick of Playoff Appearances

The Columbus Blue Jackets qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2016-2017and finished third in the Eastern Conference, their best ever finish. They lost to the Penguins in the First Round and then lost to the Capitals in the First Round the next season too.

2018-2019 saw them complete a hat-trick of playoff appearances and that is a sign that things are looking up for them once again. Will the playoffs result in them winning their first major championship? Book your Columbus Blue Jackets Stanley Cup tickets to find out.
