Formed in 1941, New York Knicks is a professional basketball team based in New York City playing in National Basketball Association. The team's formal name is New York Knickerbockers. In the initial years, New York Knicks continuously outshined other teams with such sweeping victories as making the NBA finals, three years in a row in the early 1950s. After that, the team's performance slackened a bit but they still managed to attract attention by fielding well and making it to the playoffs in 1955 to 56. Tough times fell on the team in the 1960s till 1966, and the team couldn't go up from the last position in NBA Eastern Division all these years. They faced two major upsets in 1953 and 1962 but performed very well overall. Willis Reed, the team's star player was crowned 1965's NBA Rookie of the Year.

The New York Knicks rose again when Red Holzman was hired as their head coach in 1968 making them a playoff team again. When Dave DeBusschere joined the team, the team scored 55 27. Then they defeated Baltimore Bullets in three games, yet lost to Boston Celtics in the finals. The 1969-70 season saws the Knicks holding a NBA record by 18 consecutive wins, the best in the team's history. When the team faced the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals, their captain Reed performed extraordinarily well in spite of a torn muscle in his right leg. Reed's heroic move motivated his team and they won the game due to their boosted spirits.

The New York Knicks managed to sweep the basketball arena for the coming three years. However they did lose to the Bullets in the 1971 Eastern Conference finals. They geared up their act and returned to the 1972 finals when two shining players Jerry Lucas and Earl Monroe joined them. However, they were unsuccessful against The Lakers in five games. They did manage to reverse their failures by winning five games against their rivals and thus winning their second NBA title in four years. The team's good days continued in the 1973 to 74. In the final of Eastern Conference finals the team lost five games against Celtics and at this point Reed retired from the Knicks with the morale of the team further down. Reed then took upon the role from Holzman as the coach of the team. Due to poor show of performance by the Knicks, Holzman was reinstated as the coach. Still, that did not help them, and they finished with the worst record in thirteen years in the next season.

New York Knicks continued with their ups and downs in the coming years. In the 1987-88 season, the team had a lucky break when an old pro, Rick Pitino joined as the head coach. However, though this change affected the team a little positive, they went through some major losses like being defeated by Chicago Bulls in the semi-finals of a local event. When the 1989 90 season commenced, Stu Jackson took the reins of the team as the coach with the result that Celtics lost out to the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. The Knicks managed to gain victory in the final three games; however in the next round the NBA champion Detroit Pistons thrashed them.

Changes were again made and a new coach was hired again, yet the Knicks lost out to the champion team Bulls. Apart from the above noteworthy phases in the career span of New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh took over the role as team president in May 2008. As a first step, Walsh hired a new coach who signed a four-year contract to train the players. Apart from that, extensive changes in the team structure were also made. With a little shuffle here and there, the team is faring well altogether, and undoubtedly a crowd puller. The present set-up of Madison Square Garden has been the home of the Knicks since 1968.
