The Jets: A Little History
On August 14, 1959, the American Football League (AFL) held a meeting in which Harry Wismer proposed the idea for the state of New York to have another football team. He also said that he was capable enough to run the franchise. The proposal was approved and the new franchise was named "Titans of New York."
The new side began to play at the Polo Grounds initially but financial struggles marred their first three years. It reached a point where the AFL had to step in and seize control of the Titans in 1962. Luckily, Sonny Werblin bought the team and renamed them the Jets. He also moved the side to the Shea Stadium.
The Jets clinched their first division title and the AFL-NFL Super Bowl in the year 1968. They went on to win their second straight division title the next year. Then the AFL and the NFL merged and the Jets struggled in the new setting. They went on to win another division title in 1998 and then followed that up by clinching another division title in 2002.
